Event Categories
and Specifications

 

Navigational Rallies

Offshore Challenge navigational rallies, including the Bass Strait Rally and the East Coaster, are competitive events (navigation, not racing) and so boats are grouped into classes and sub-categories.  Details of classes and categories are issued for each event as it is announced.

Expeditions 

Offshore Challenge expeditions, including The Kimberley Challenge, are non-competitive and so do not require performance classifications.

Expeditions

 Minimum Requirements

a

Have an overall length of 5.4 metres or greater

b

Have a cabin (enclosed) or half-cabin (open)

c

Be equipped with an auxiliary engine 

(for single engined boats only)

 d

Be fitted with all safety equipment as specified by Marine Safety Authority (Western Australia)

e

Be equipped with the additional expedition items as listed in the Event Regulations

f

Be registered in the owner's home state of Australia

 

Sailing Craft

The Offshore Challenge is designed for power boats, not yachts and sailing craft. 

Off-shore Racing Craft

An important part of the Offshore Challenge Series is that each event  is open to skilled amateurs and boating enthusiasts.   The events are not designed for purpose-built offshore racing powerboats. Commercial Entries

Commercial entries are welcome. Boat manufacturers, boat dealers and any organisation in the marine industries wishing to enter should contact the organisers for details of special incentives, sponsorship arrangements and other joint promotional opportunities. 

Boat Registration

All craft must be registered with the relevant authority in their home state.  Documentary proof of current registration will be required at pre-event scrutineering.

Crews

Each crew must consist of a minimum of two persons.  The maximum number of crew, including the skipper, is six. All skippers must hold a current power boat license.  All crew members who may take the helm at any stage during the event must also hold a power boat licence. Crew members under the age of 18 will require written consent of a parent or guardian in order to participate.
